We know most of our customers deal with spam conversations that can make it difficult to organize customer queries and reply in a timely manner. With our spam feature, you can mark these conversations as spam and keep them out of your inboxes and queues so your agents can focus on customers who actually need your help.

**Who can access this feature?**

**User types**

Admins can set up spam filters.

### Creating spam filters

If you are using Kustomer's default client to send and receive emails, you can create spam filters to help eliminate spam. You can also create a filter that will allow emails from specific addresses to always arrive in your agent's inboxes.

**To block an email address:**

1. Go to **Settings** **\> Administration >** **Spam** **Filters**.
2. Enter the email address you want to block in the field provided.
3. Select **Add to Block List**.
4. Repeat these steps to continue adding addresses.
The email addresses on your block list are listed, along with the date they were added.

Deleting an email that was previously blocked will allow emails from that address to arrive in your inbox.

**Note:** You can also automatically add a sender's email address to the block list by [marking an email conversation as spam](https://help.kustomer.com/mark-a-conversation-as-spam-SkkErPQyP). Unmarking a conversation as spam will automatically remove the address from this list. You can also manually remove an address from this list to start receiving emails from this sender again.

**To allow an email address:**

1. From the Spam Filters page, select the **Allow List** tab.
2. Enter the email address you want to allow in the field provided.
3. Select **Add to Allow List**.
4. Repeat these steps to continue adding addresses.
All incoming emails from the addresses listed will arrive in your inbox, regardless of the content in the email.

### Allow or block entire domains

You can use [wildcard characters](https://www.w3schools.com/sql/sql_wildcards.asp#:~:text=A%20wildcard%20character%20is%20used,specified%20pattern%20in%20a%20column.) to either block or allow emails from certain domains. Wildcards are special characters that you can use in English-language search queries to represent unknown characters. This is useful when you want to create rules that search and match on a broader scale, like finding all email addresses from an entire domain name.

For example, you may want to always receive emails that come from _kustomer.com_ and prevent them from being marked as spam. You can do this by adding **\*@kustomer.com** to the **allow** list.

Similarly, you may want to block all emails from _acme.com_ and can do so by adding **\*@acme.com** to the **block** list.

**Note:** If you use wildcards to block or allow emails from an entire domain, and then add an individual email address from that domain to the opposite list, priority will be given to the individual email address.

For example, let's say you added \*@acme.com to your block list and then add [jim@acme.com](mailto:jim@acme.com) to your allow list. You will receive all emails from Jim, and any other emails that come from acme.com will continue to be blocked.

### **How the spam block list works with business rules**

Adding an email address to the block list sets the __Conversation > Spam__ attribute to ****True**** on incoming messages from that address. The block list alone does ****not**** automatically close or hide conversations from agent queues.

To auto-close spam conversations, you need a business rule:

1. From the left navigation, click ****Settings****. The Settings page opens.
2. Click ****Platform****, then select ****Business Rules****.
3. Create or edit a business rule with the trigger ****First Inbound Interaction****.
4. Add the condition: __Conversation > Spam__ equals __True__.
5. Set the action to change the conversation status to ****Done****.

****Important:**** If your spam business rule includes a "From" condition that checks for specific email addresses, the rule only matches those listed addresses. Remove overly restrictive "From" conditions to ensure the rule applies to all blocked senders.

### Reviewing the email suppression list

If you have migrated to Amazon SES from either Postmark or Gmail, you are able to manage your own email suppression list.

To review and manage this list, visit **Settings > Administration >** **Spam Filters** and click **Suppression list**. From this list, you can see the email address added, the date the address was added, the reason it was added to the list, and you have an option to manually remove it.

Removal of an email from the suppression list is considered a sensitive operation, and your organization should carefully weigh the risks to your **sender reputation** and **deliverability rates**.
